A New Round: The Evolution of Philadelphia’s Iconic Mighty Mick’s
Step into the world of Rocky Balboa, and you’ll find yourself in the gritty, no-nonsense Mighty Mick’s Gym, where legends were made with every punch thrown. But did you know that the iconic training ground of Philadelphia’s most famous underdog never really existed as a gym? Today, the building that famously served as the exterior of Mighty Mick’s Gym in the Rocky franchise has traded its cinematic boxing history for modern living spaces.
Located in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood, 2145 N Front Street served as the exterior for Mighty Mick’s Gym, where Rocky prepared for his battles against Apollo Creed. Over time, it had significantly deteriorated. The Select Development team saw its potential and enlisted Ambit and Pennoni to transform it into modern residential units with a roof deck and improved commercial space.
Pennoni’s structural work included a survey revealing the need for complete interior demolition and re-framing. They developed a construction sequence to brace exterior walls during demolition, ensuring stability. Pennoni also devised a method to lower the basement without underpinning the foundations, reducing costs and risks. The new framing used engineered wood, with floors connected to exterior walls for stability. Historically accurate “star bolt” anchors preserved the building’s aesthetic. Pennoni documented masonry repairs to maintain the building’s historic character.
For all the professionals and tradespeople involved, the adaptive reuse of the building became a passion project. Select’s vice president of construction noted, “This project was one that we looked forward to because of its nostalgia. Being able to add ‘Mighty Micks Gym’ to our portfolio and revitalize such a historical cinematic landmark was very important to Select. Pennoni really helped guide us in the right direction from a structural standpoint, so we were able to preserve as much of the existing building as possible.”
The Mighty Mick’s gym also won the Outstanding Award Winner in the Buildings Under $5M category for the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers!
