When a specialty Chemical Manufacturer decided to expand their plant and needed additional power and steam, they reached out to Pennoni to design and build a new utility plant because of Pennoni’s engineering-led Design-Build approach to complicated and innovative energy projects.
Pennoni designed an innovative Combined Heat & Power (CHP) plant for the customer which is more efficient than the traditional approach of buying electric power from the utility and producing steam through a boiler. The new CHP plant designed by Pennoni will feature a 1 MW gas turbine with supplemental firing of the exhaust, heating to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit producing steam up to 17,000 pounds per hour.
The project will reduce the plant’s carbon footprint while substantially lowering their energy costs. Pennoni facilitated a $1 million grant from the PA Department of Community Economic Development along with a $250,000 rebate from PP&L for the client. Pennoni also provided construction administration, environmental including air permitting, MEP, and structural services.
