The United States Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland, becomes home to approximately 1,200 new midshipmen each year. Adjacent to Nimitz Library on campus, McNair Road Bridge was recently in need of replacement. The six-span continuous bridge is located at the mouth of the environmentally sensitive Chesapeake Bay. Tight design and construction tolerances were required to tie the bridge into pile supported approaches at both ends and a pile supported library along the length. The bridge was made up of prestressed concrete beams with a reinforced concrete façade beam, and an expedited schedule was required to complete the work prior to the start of the fall semester. Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) technologies were used because of the short construction period available.
