Downtown Williamsburg faces unique challenges being located between a national tourism destination, Colonial Williamsburg, and a public university – the College of William and Mary. Pennoni designed seven site-specific development recommendations, as well as study-area-wide recommendations which focused strongly on implementation, place-making, and pedestrian connectivity, and included streetscape and public realm improvements, design guidelines, and recommendations for programming and events. A major component of these recommendations was the development of street typologies, which were coupled with ideas for streetscape and public realm improvements. Each major street within the downtown area was classified as one of three street typologies, which informed both right-of-way configurations as well as streetscaping.
